Team Sunweb star Warren Barguil has been sent home by his team as they felt he strayed from the race goals. Barquil was the team domestique at VueltaaEspana but the climber wanted a free role in the mountains.

The team had several disagreements during the course of the race and it climaxed in stage 8 so Sunweb decided to send him home. They said the pro cyclist “openly expressed” his non conformation to the goal of the team so there was “no other option” than announce that Barguil would leave the race immediately.

The action would surely affect Team Sunweb’s overall race objectives, especially as Barguil was the best placed cyclist on general classification before Stage 8. Barguil was on the 13th spot, about 1:43 from Team Sky’s Chris Froome. Sunweb’sWilcoKelderman and Sam Oomen placed 14th and 15th on GC 1:45 and 2:14 respectively.

The team claimed there were several instances where Barguil didn’t follow through the team goals like not waiting for Kelderman after he punctured on Stage 7. The lost time affected that stage performance as Wilco was the man appointed for GC in the Vuelta.

Barguil confirmed that he would be leaving. He admitted that he saw himself “in a different role,” preferring to attack in the mountains like he did in the Tour. He reportedly told journalists that not waiting for Kelderman was not such a big issue.

The climber would be expected to exit the Sunweb jersey with options like Fortuneo-Oscaro linked to him ahead of the 2018 races.
